EOBD is the European version of OBD2. Any OBD2 scanner that supports all nine standard protocols will read engine fault codes on petrol cars sold in the UK from 2001 and diesels from 2004.

Will an OBD2 scanner work on my car?

If your car is a petrol model from 2001 or a diesel from 2004 sold in the UK or EU, it has an EOBD port under the dashboard. Generic engine codes and live data will work with any compliant scanner.

Petrol cars from 2001 and diesels from 2004 in the UK use EOBD.

What do generic scanners not read?

ABS, airbag, transmission and body modules use manufacturer-specific codes. You need an enhanced or all-system scanner and the right vehicle coverage for those.

Can a scanner help before an MOT?

Yes. Readiness monitors show whether emission systems have completed self-tests, and a lit engine warning light is an MOT failure.
