Short answer: pick an OBD2 scanner by coverage — a basic code reader for engine and emissions faults, or an all-system scanner if you need ABS, airbag, transmission and service functions — then check vehicle compatibility, live data, and how it connects (cable, handheld or Bluetooth app).
How does on-board diagnostics (OBD2 / EOBD) work?
Modern cars are run by electronic control units that constantly monitor sensors such as oxygen sensors, airflow meters, coolant temperature and misfire detection. When a monitored value falls outside its expected range, the control unit stores a diagnostic trouble code and, for emissions-related faults, may switch on the engine malfunction indicator lamp.

OBD2 standardises a 16-pin connector, usually found under the dashboard on the driver's side, plus a common set of emissions-related codes and live data parameters. In Europe the equivalent requirement is known as EOBD and was introduced through Directive 98/69/EC. A scanner plugs into that connector, talks to the control units and translates codes into readable descriptions.
The standardised part covers emissions systems. Systems such as ABS, airbags, body electronics and adaptive services use manufacturer-specific protocols, which is why scanners vary so much in what they can reach.
Which type of car diagnostic tool is right for me?
| Tool | Reaches | Best for | Limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Basic code reader | Engine and emissions codes, clear MIL | Checking why the engine light is on | No ABS, airbag or service functions |
| Bluetooth OBD2 adapter + app | Live data and codes via phone | Enthusiasts who want graphs and logging | Features depend on the app |
| All-system scanner | Engine, transmission, ABS, SRS, body modules | Home mechanics and small garages | Coverage varies by make and year |
| Bi-directional scan tool | Commands actuators, runs tests and resets | Garages and advanced users | Higher price, more to learn |
| 12 V battery tester | Battery health, cranking and charging checks | Starting and charging faults | Not a fault-code reader |
| EVAP smoke leak tester | Finds vacuum and evaporative leaks | Lean codes, EVAP faults, intake leaks | Needs suitable adapters |
| Automotive multimeter | Voltage, resistance, RPM, dwell | Sensor and wiring checks | Requires electrical knowledge |

What features matter most?
Vehicle coverage. Check the tool's coverage list for your make, model and year, especially for non-engine systems. "Works with all OBD2 cars" usually refers only to the standard emissions functions.
Live data and freeze frame. Live data shows sensor values in real time; freeze frame records conditions at the moment a fault was stored. Both are far more useful for diagnosis than a code alone.
Readiness monitors. These show whether the car's self-tests have completed since codes were last cleared. They are useful before an MOT, because clearing codes resets them.
Service functions. Oil service reset, electronic parking brake retraction, battery registration, steering angle calibration and injector coding are common on mid-range tools. Confirm which ones apply to your car.
Updates and language. Look for clear update terms and descriptions in UK English.
Connection. Cabled handhelds are self-contained; Bluetooth adapters rely on a phone and app but can log and graph data easily.
How are diagnostic tools used in the UK?
In Great Britain the MOT test includes checks of the engine malfunction indicator lamp, and the DVSA MOT inspection manual sets out how faults are assessed. A scanner helps you understand a warning lamp before the test rather than after it. The government's MOT history service also lets owners view previous results and advisories, which can point to recurring issues worth investigating with a scanner.
Common UK uses include diagnosing intermittent faults, checking used cars before purchase, confirming a repair worked, resetting service indicators, and supporting battery replacement on cars with start-stop systems.
What are the common mistakes?
- Clearing codes without fixing the cause. The lamp will return, and readiness monitors will show the car has not completed its self-tests.
- Buying for the wrong systems. A basic reader cannot read airbag or ABS faults.
- Replacing parts on the code description alone. A code shows which circuit or system flagged a fault, not necessarily which part failed.
- Ignoring battery voltage. Low voltage can cause misleading faults and interrupt coding procedures.
- Running smoke tests without the right adapters or with the engine running. Follow the tool's instructions.
Frequently asked questions
Will an OBD2 scanner work on my car?
Petrol cars sold in Europe from the early 2000s and diesels from a few years later generally support EOBD. Check the tool's coverage list for your exact model, especially for systems beyond the engine.
Can a scanner turn off the engine warning light?
Most can clear stored codes, which turns the lamp off, but it will come back if the fault remains. Clearing also resets readiness monitors.
What is the difference between a code reader and a scan tool?
A code reader reads and clears engine codes. A scan tool adds live data, freeze frame and access to more systems, and bi-directional tools can command components for testing.
Do I need a battery tester if I have a multimeter?
A multimeter shows voltage only. A dedicated battery tester estimates the battery's ability to deliver cranking current, which voltage alone cannot reveal.
What does a smoke leak tester find?
It fills an intake or evaporative system with visible vapour at low pressure so you can see where it escapes, revealing leaks that cause lean running and EVAP codes.
What should I check before ordering?
Before you order any diagnostic tool, write down the measurements or tasks it must handle, the range and accuracy you need, where it will be used and who will use it. Compare those notes with each product's specification sheet rather than its headline features, and keep the manual and any certificates with the instrument once it arrives.
